 wine story

I found the label artwork chronicling San Franciscian vineyard plantings from a map in a state viticultural report dated 1881. The heart marks the location where our first vineyard was planted in 2013 to Pinot Noir, clone 828, at Alemany Farms. While our own vines are too young to produce fruit, the Pinot Noir sourced for this bottling is also clone 828. This particular clone of Pinot Noir is rumored to have been stolen from a Romanée-Conti planting in Burgundy circa 1970, and the clippings used to establish this vineyard were no doubt taken from somewhere else. I like to think about the movement of vine clippings and how the act of propagating stolen clippings makes the rooted vines one's own. Tide + Travel is inspired, I suppose, by this theft and reinvention.

A site-driven wine sourced from two vineyards both on the edge of their respective appellations, this year’s Tide + Travel inherits her fruit and structure from the Edna Valley and her cool climate spice and chaparral character from the Santa Maria Valley. Vibrant ruby in color and silky on the palate, this Pinot Noir expresses the balance and grace of the 2013 vintage. Bright, focused rhubarb and cranberry acidity support dark cherry and brooding Satsuma plum notes, while the wine is grounded by damp soil, with distinct mineral notes on the finish.
